ALASKA STATE LEGISLATURE HOUSE TRANSPORTATION STANDING COMMITTEE March 15, 2001 1:40 p.m. COMMITTEE CALENDAR DOT PRESENTATION ON ALASKA INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM TAPES Tape 01-20, SIDE A CALL TO ORDER REPRESENTATIVE VIC KOHRING, Chair, called the House Transportation Standing Committee to order at 1:40 p.m. PRESENT Committee members present were Representatives Kohring, Kapsner, Kookesh, Scalzi, Wilson. Representatives Masek and Ogan were excused. SUMMARY OF INFORMATION JEFF OTTESEN, Statewide Planning Chief, Department of Transportation, provided overview of the Alaska Intelligent Transportation System (AITS) in a Power Point presentation. In response to questions, Mr. Ottesen provided the following information. He reported that road chemicals produce minimal impacts. In response to questions regarding the monitoring for bridge scour [undermining of abutments by rapid water flow], Mr. Ottesen noted that the equipment does not monitor for scour. He also reported minimal impacts from scour. In regard to the operating costs of the remote weather information equipment, Mr. Ottesen that the operating costs for the tower equipment and the pedestals are $18,000 and $20,000, respectively. To the question as to the impacts of bad weather on the equipment and staffing, Mr. Ottesen said that the staffing wouldn't be reduced. Mr. Ottesen also answered questions concerning funding sources, operating costs, and whether the system had any benefits for the Alaska Marine Highway System.
